What is the Specified Skilled Worker System?
Specified Skilled Worker is a status of residence created to give foreign nationals more opportunities to work in Japan. There are two types of the status of residence of Specified Skilled Worker: Specified Skilled Worker (i) and Specified Skilled Worker (ii). The status of residence of Specified Skilled Worker (ii) requires more specialized skills than Specified Skilled Worker (i). At present, Specified Skilled Worker (i) allows people to work in 16 fields, and Specified Skilled Worker (ii) allows people to work in 11 fields. For more information about these fields, see “Industrial fields covered by Specified Skilled Worker System” below.

Requirements for obtaining the status of residence of Specified Skilled Worker
In order to work under the status of residence of Specified Skilled Worker, you need to pass a Japanese language test and the skill exam. (You do not need to pass these tests if you have satisfactorily completed Technical Intern Training (ii). However, to work in a different field, you need to pass the skill exam in the field in which you wish to work.) Afterward, if you sign a contract with a company, you can apply for your status of residence of Specified Skilled Worker. If your application is approved, you will be able to work as a Specified Skilled Worker.
